Based around the diary kept by Donald Seth-Smith, this is an account of the First World War in East Africa. One of the longest and most obscure campaigns, the East Africa Campaign was fought in Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique and as far as Zambia. It was a war where Africa was the greatest challenge: tough terrain, hunger, thirst and disease took their toll on the soldiers as did the constant threat of attacks by wildlife.

Donald's Story

Donald settled in British East Africa as a young man in 1906. A natural farmer and sportsman, he quickly took advantage of the many opportunities the nascent protectorate had to offer. In 1914 when war broke out, he and his brother, Martin, both enlisted. Donald fought in the significant battles at Salaita and Latima Nek, before embarking on the hunt for the wily German Commander, Von Lettow Vorbeck, down into the depths of Southern Tanzania. He was invalided out of the army in 1917.
